December 26, 1776 — Battle of Trenton
The war looked lost by Christmas. Washington’s army was beaten, starving, and shrinking by the day.
So he gambled. Christmas night, he dragged men and cannon across an ice-choked Delaware River. Cold that cut to the bone, sleet slashing faces, boats near splintering.
By dawn, they hit Trenton. The Hessians, fat on feast and drink, stumbled into the street. Muskets cracked, bayonets thrust, drums rolled. In less than an hour, the town was ours.
It wasn’t the biggest battle. But it was the boldest. Trenton proved the Revolution still had fight—and gave America back its hope.
