November 16, 1776 — Fall of Fort Washington

Fort Washington was supposed to anchor our defense of Manhattan. Instead, it became a grave marker.

Washington hesitated to abandon it, some said against his better judgment. Howe came at it with overwhelming force—Hessians climbing the heights, British pushing from the river. The garrison fought, but numbers told the tale.

Nearly 3,000 patriots captured in one day. Muskets, cannon, powder—all lost. The worst defeat of the war to that point.

The kind that makes you question everything.

But sometimes the darkest blows light the next fire. The men who escaped swore vengeance. And in time, Washington gave it to them on the Delaware.

— Captain Samuel Mason, Washington County Militia
