October 28, 1776 — Battle of White Plains

After Harlem Heights, Washington thought he had a handle on New York. Then Howe marched again.

At White Plains, our boys fought stubborn—rifle pits, stone walls, skirmishes through farms. But the British pressed us out, as steady as a tide. Washington pulled back. Another retreat.

Losses hurt. But the army survived. And that was Washington’s true gift—not winning every field, but keeping the fight alive.

I learned the same on the frontier: sometimes survival is the victory.

— Captain Samuel Mason, Washington County Militia
