I’ve seen men form gangs for power. Others for gold. But MS-13? These boys formed a gang for survival—and then turned it into a bloody empire.

Born in Los Angeles in the 1980s by Salvadoran refugees fleeing civil war, MS-13 started as a way to protect their own from other street crews. But give a wounded dog too many teeth, and it stops protecting—it starts hunting.

Now, their spider web stretches across El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and deep into U.S. cities. Their weapon? Fear. Beheadings, machete hits, extortion, sex trafficking, and initiation killings—like they’re auditioning for nightmares.

And when the U.S. started deporting gang members en masse, they didn’t dissolve—they expanded. Exported terror. Took over slums and prisons alike. In El Salvador, some of them built “colonies” in cells, ruling from behind bars like pirate captains in exile. Whole neighborhoods fly their ink.

Now the Salvadoran government’s cracked down with mass arrests—tens of thousands jailed, cities locked down, entire communities under surveillance. Looks clean, sounds bold. But Sam knows: if you don’t build something better than the gang, all you’ve done is clear room for another flag to rise.

I knew plenty of criminals who came out of war and wanted peace. These fellas? They came out of chaos and doubled down on it. That’s a difference you best not miss.

If you want to stop an MS-13 before it forms:

Get eyes inside the prisons. That’s where they regroup. Give youth a choice beyond crime, not just a sermon. And for God’s sake—watch who you deport and where. A gang ain’t gone just because you send it home. Sometimes home is the gang.

I ran from justice. These boys run toward domination. Don’t mix the two.
