Picture a pirate ship that never leaves port—except this one runs the city. That’s G9, the Haitian mega-gang coalition that’s seized control of Port-au-Prince. They’ve got the checkpoints, the tax extortions, the killings—and now, the politicians answer to them.

They formed around 2020 under the shadow of Haiti’s collapse, official violence, and power vacuums. G9 is actually an alliance of nine gangs—including the infamous Gran Ravin—building a criminal state in broad daylight.

When they want peace—or fear—they lay siege. Remember the June 2022 massacre of civilians and police? Another dozen were found in mass graves this year as violence flared again (bbc.com). Their fighters are armed like militias, not gangs—holding entire neighborhoods hostage.

Too many still whisper that G9 is “just poor men fighting.” But let me tell you: suffering don’t excuse tyranny. I’ve seen pirates who stole from fishermen to survive. This? They’ve stolen the shore, the fields, the schools, the future.

If Haitian police could push back, they’d need to do it right. Coordinated patrols—supported by trusted international forces—and local councils empowered to report without fear. When the checkpoints show up, witnesses must speak—and hold the line.

You don’t solve a gang-run state with a handshake. You start by breaking their rules: block the taxes, shut the supply lines, protect the people—not just lodge complaints.

No gang deserves to rule. Not MS‑13, not PCC, and certainly not G9. Tyranny is tyranny—whether it sails on rivers or streets.

Until next tide,
