Picture a pirate ship that never leaves portâexcept this one runs the city. Thatâs G9, the Haitian mega-gang coalition thatâs seized control of Port-au-Prince. Theyâve got the checkpoints, the tax extortions, the killingsâand now, the politicians answer to them.
They formed around 2020 under the shadow of Haitiâs collapse, official violence, and power vacuums. G9 is actually an alliance of nine gangsâincluding the infamous Gran Ravinâbuilding a criminal state in broad daylight.
When they want peaceâor fearâthey lay siege. Remember the June 2022 massacre of civilians and police? Another dozen were found in mass graves this year as violence flared again (bbc.com). Their fighters are armed like militias, not gangsâholding entire neighborhoods hostage.
Too many still whisper that G9 is âjust poor men fighting.â But let me tell you: suffering donât excuse tyranny. Iâve seen pirates who stole from fishermen to survive. This? Theyâve stolen the shore, the fields, the schools, the future.
If Haitian police could push back, theyâd need to do it right. Coordinated patrolsâsupported by trusted international forcesâand local councils empowered to report without fear. When the checkpoints show up, witnesses must speakâand hold the line.
You donât solve a gang-run state with a handshake. You start by breaking their rules: block the taxes, shut the supply lines, protect the peopleânot just lodge complaints.
No gang deserves to rule. Not MSâ13, not PCC, and certainly not G9. Tyranny is tyrannyâwhether it sails on rivers or streets.
Until next tide,
