Big fleets may glimmer in parades and photo‑ops, but Sam Mason knows the real test comes when supplies run low—and the rigging needs tightening. NATO’s recent Hague gathering looked like unity on the surface: a 5% GDP defense spending pledge, smiles, and toasts. But below decks? Leaks are showing.

These build‑ups come after Trump’s goading, riled by Europe’s longtime free rides. The U.S. pushed hard, and now Europe’s signing up—Germany, Poland, even Spain (though it’s testing the waters at only 2.1%)  . Meanwhile, Putin’s already cozying up to middle powers, and Ukraine—with its forces fraying under the weight of war—is left reeling despite summit slogans.

Let’s compare it to 1780. Back then, a ragtag coalition of frontier militias and French allies banded together against the Redcoats. They didn’t just sign accords—they shared muskets, food, and mutual risk. But once the war ended, many European allies pulled back. Soldiers returned home, wallets closed, and America was left patching fences alone.

America remains when others leave.

Today, NATO makes the same mistake: inked promises to spend more—but no clear how or when. No shared industrial effort, no unified logistic network—just national pride and accounting tricks. Spain bows out, Europe ponders Chinese and Russian end-runs, while the U.S. makes trade threats if allies don’t toe the line.

My old crew on the Kentucky River knew a stronger crew worked together—not just talked tough. They shared rations, kept watch in two‑hour shifts, and didn’t break camp until every wounded man rode free. NATO today has the promise of a fleet—but the sailors are still arguing over who pays for the rope and who pays for the stew.

So Sam warns ye, alliances aren’t built on Twitter grins or photo‑ops. They’re forged in shared risk, shared labor, and shared sacrifices. Raise the sails if ye must—but make sure someone’s hauling on the ropes when the storm hits.

Until next tide,

– Sam Mason, still watchin’ the river
