So there’s this gang down Venezuela way, call themselves the Tren de Aragua. Big, nasty outfit. They traffic folks, run extortion rings, and move drugs like they’re hauling logs downriver. And I’ll say this straight: they ain’t pirates. They’re something else. And not in a good way.
Now don’t mistake me—I wasn’t no altar boy. My crew and I, we robbed flatboats and wagons, sure. But we didn’t steal children or run a brothel out of a prison cell. That’s the work of beasts, not men.

Tren de Aragua started inside a Venezuelan prison—if you can believe it, the government just let ‘em run the joint. From there they spread across South America and right on up into the States. They’ve been linked to murders in Florida, New York, and even Tennessee. They extort migrants on their way north, promising safe passage and delivering bullets or slavery instead.
Now, back in my day, you took a man’s coin or his mule, but you didn’t burn his house or snatch his kin. There was a code, even among rogues. You could ride with Mason and keep your soul—at least most of it. These Aragua boys? Their soul’s long gone.
We used the river to move quick and vanish—these fellas use highways and encrypted apps. We had muskets and knives—they’ve got Glocks and WhatsApp. And where my crew had to watch out for rangers and frontier justice, these fellas move through holes in broken systems, crossing borders faster than any posse can catch ’em.
The difference? We were a gang of men on the edge of empire—left to fend for ourselves after fighting a king’s war. They are the result of a failed state and global indifference, thriving in a world where nobody wants to look too close.
So what would I do if I met ‘em? Probably the same thing I did to horse thieves who didn’t play fair: put ’em in the river. Face down.
Until next tide,
